Connecting Local to Global

Volvo Practical Environment Projects

The Practical Environment Projects (PEP) scheme was developed and written by WTA Education Services for Volvo Cars UK, and administered by Marketing Activity. Running for six years, Volvo PEP provided schools and environmental groups activity sheets and plans to improve their local environment, focusing on four topic areas:

· Green Spaces—play areas, bird feeding stations, wildflower meadows and sensory gardens.

· Pollution Solutions—litter, graffiti, vandalism and noise.

· Resource Race—saving water, energy and other resource use.

· Transport—pollution, habitat loss and accessibility of public transport.

The PEP pack contained ideas for age range 3 to 18 years, with ideas appropriate for Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 with suggestions for GCSE and students to 18 years of age. It included practical work pages and useful sheets to photocopy for distribution to group members, and information on how to apply for a grant to support environmental projects. Over 5,000 activity packs were distributed to schools each year, with £103,500 of grant money allocated to 256 successful applicants in 1999, when three national awards totaling £10,000 were also presented.
